Transfer Credit Information

New students will have their transcripts automatically evaluated as soon as they have been admitted to UNCG. Articulation review usually takes at least two weeks after admission. 

To check the status of transcript evaluations, watch the application checklist in our student portal. In this portal, students can see which transcripts have been received and whether they have been evaluated. 

Students who have taken coursework elsewhere while still enrolled at UNCG will have their credit evaluation done as quickly as possible — usually about 1 week after providing the Registrar’s Office with their official transcripts from the transfer institution. 

Students should follow their transfer institution’s procedure to have an official transcript sent to UNCG. After that transcript is received, transfer credit will be posted to the student’s UNCGenie account and will automatically be applied in Degree Works.

Students who are curious about a course taken outside UNCG might transfer for credit can search for it using the UNCG Transfer Credit Planner. This database includes listings of thousands of courses at hundreds of institutions. Students can look up their transfer institution, then find the classes they have taken to see a comparison of how they can expect coursework to translate at UNCG.

Future students who are currently attending a North Carolina community college or public university benefit from the state’s Comprehensive Articulation Agreement (CAA), a set of rules that determine how their credits transfer. 

2Plus programs and their associated transfer credits correspond to specific AAS and UNCG degrees. If you choose to change to a major outside of your 2Plus program, you may lose some transfer credits. Major changes in restrictive 2Plus programs must be approved by the 2Plus coordinator in the Undergraduate Admissions Office.

Additionally, UNCG will only transfer up to 64 hours from a two-year college. While you may earn course credit for classes successfully completed beyond this limit, you will not earn additional hours. Once you have transferred to UNCG through our 2Plus program, you will need to complete all of the general education requirements and departmental requirements in order to earn your bachelor’s degree. To determine which courses are already satisfied through your transfer credits, you can review your Degree Works report. Courses eligible for credit exclusively through 2Plus programs will not transfer if they are taken after the AAS degree is earned.

The following guides include some transfer credit that is available exclusively through the associated 2Plus programs, as well as other recommended coursework.

Minerva’s Academic Curriculum (MAC) is UNCG’s multidisciplinary approach to general education requirements. MAC includes a series of courses that go beyond strict subject areas and aim to give students an edge after graduation by focusing on the skills, knowledge, and understanding necessary to be a lifelong learner, an ethical and independent decision maker, a critical and creative thinker, a clear and effective communicator, and a responsible citizen. MAC provides students with the foundations and alternative perspectives that enrich their studies within their chosen major. More information about MAC is available through Student Success.

There is no cost to participate in the Reverse Transfer program. Eligible students are automatically notified about the program in UNCGenie, though they must opt in to participate. 

Students should work with their community college to ensure their UNCG transcripts are being evaluated accurately. The community college can also provide information about how to participate in graduation ceremonies and how to receive a printed diploma. (Keep in mind there may be a cost associated with the diploma and graduation ceremony, assessed by the community college.) 

Students who participate in the Reverse Transfer Program and earn an associate of art or science degree will generally satisfy the University’s lower-level general education requirements after providing UNCG with an official transcript showing the degree was earned. It’s important for students to work closely with their advisors at UNCG and the community college to ensure all degree-specific requirements are being met along the way.

Steps in Filing an Appeal

Step #1:

• By the last day of classes of the first semester for which admission is offered, the student must submit a Transfer Credit Appeal Form along with any supporting documentation to UNCG. Students first enrolling at UNCG in a summer session must submit their appeal by the end of the subsequent fall semester.
• The student should specify on the appeal form the specific nature of their appeal, including references to the language of the CAA or UAA that is in contention.
• UNCG will review the appeal and respond in writing (email or letter) to the student within 15 business days.

Step #2:

• If the student is not satisfied with the initial response to their appeal, they may appeal on the same form to the Chief Academic Officer (Provost) of the University within 15 days of written notice of the initial decision.
• The Provost will review the appeal and respond in writing (email or letter) to the student within 15 business days of receiving the student’s appeal.

Step #3:

• If the student is not satisfied with the decision of the Provost, he/she may appeal to the Transfer Advisory Committee (TAC) subcommittee, composed of the Co-chairs, a
  representative from the UNC System Office, and a representative from the NCCCS. The student must submit the appeal to the subcommittee within 15 days of the receipt of the Provost’s decision. The appeal to the TAC subcommittee should be sent to:

  If a consensus is reached by the subcommittee, the student will be notified within 15 business days; if a consensus resolution is not reached, the appeal will be forwarded by the subcommittee to the full TAC within 10 business days. The TAC will review the appeal and notify the student of the final decision within 10 business days of receiving the appeal.
